Ireland - Niall Drennan

Part 1 - The Artist

For the second year running, Ireland has gone with an internal selection. This is perhaps a surprising move given last year’s internal selection of Nicky Byrne failed to qualify for the Grand Final.

This year, RTE have enlisted Louis Walsh to take the lead for Ireland’s 2017 Eurovision entry.  Louis is no stranger to Eurovision.  He was Johnny Logan’s manager when Johnny won Eurovision for the first time in 1980 and also managed Linda Martin when she won in 1992.  He has been involved in the Irish national selection, Eurosong, over the years as a panel member. In addition, he was Jedward’s manager when they represented Ireland at Eurovision in 2011 and 2012.

RTE have given Louis full control over Ireland’s 2017 entry.  Louis appeared on the Late Late Show in December and revealed that Ireland’s 2017 entry will be Brendan Murray.  Brendan, 20, is from Galway in the west of Ireland and found success as part of a six-piece boy band, Hometown, managed by Louis Walsh.  Hometown’s first single, Where I Belong, debuted at number 1 singles in Ireland in 2014.  Their second single, “Cry For Help” also reached number 1 on the Irish Singles chart in 2015.  However, their success was short lived and the band went on an indefinite hiatus in December 2016.

Louis Walsh believes that Brendan is perfect for Eurovision, saying that his distinctive voice and look will appeal to audiences across Europe. Louis is committed to finding the best song possible and has asked interested songwriters to submit potential songs.  Louis will also use his extensive music industry contacts to source the perfect song.  He has said he thinks a song in the style of Sam Smith will suit Brendan’s voice perfectly.  He has also called on Johnny Logan to write a song, saying that Johnny knows what works best when it comes to Eurovision songs.  Brendan performed a cover of Johnny Logan’s “Hold Me Now” on the Late Late Show.
