Ireland - Niall Drennan

Ireland 2017

Part 2 - The Song

As they old saying goes, it’s been a long time between drinks and this is certainly the case when it comes to Ireland’s 2017 Eurovision campaign.  It’s been over 3 months since Brendan was announced as Ireland’s artist.  Since the announcement was made last December, Louis Walsh has been going through over 300 submissions to find the perfect song for Brendan to sing in Kyiv.  On Friday 10th March 2017, RTE unveiled Brendan’s video and song - “Dying to Try”.

The track was co-written by renowned songwriter Jörgen Elofsson, who has written songs for Westlife, Britney Spears and Leona Lewis; and James Newman, who has written hits for Rudimental and Little Mix.  “Dying to Try” is a sweeping ballad with that all-important key change and Brendan describes the song as "taking a leap of faith and putting your trust in someone else".

Ireland has been drawn in the second semi-final on Thursday 11th May alongside serial qualifiers such as Russia, Serbia and Romania.  RTE must get the staging and performance exactly right if it wants to have any chance of qualifying for the Grand Final.  Time will tell if they succeed in achieving Ireland’s first qualification to the Final in 4 years.
