After some reflecting and difficult thought, I have to settle on a recent winner of the competition as my guilty pleasure. Love it or hate it - and it seems the majority falls into the hate category - she will be ever omnipresent within the ESC sphere. Of course I’m talking about Netta. I do find myself listening to Toy more than I care to admit. I mean it’s not on my regular playlist, but I do still gravitate toward it when listening to past playlists and it’s one of my favourite winners in recent history.
Say what you want about this song itself, but a lot of her subsequent releases have been absolute bops. For example, Everything is.. everything? And no one can deny that we’re all entertained and perpetually looking forward to her annual host city predictions. Her track record would earn her a record for the most “participation awards”… if the host city selection process were a grade school sports day… but that’s why I (and more people than would actually admit) are happy we have this treasure from the contest.
